Who would win a cook-off between a Jewish and an Indian grandmother when pitted against each other behind a huge pot of each ethnicity's traditional chicken soup? Here at this U. City culinary staple, the Indian grandmas have it with their Shami Murg Shorba, which takes the prize in my opinion, despite the fact that few countrymen actually eat the soup because it contains meat--and expensive meat at that. No worries, that means more for me. In the North Indian version of ye old chicken soup, served here, the boneless poultry is simmered in a buttery yellow broth and powerfully yet not overpoweringly seasoned with a delightful combination of black chili, salt and cinnamon. Move over, dear Bubbe, this is now the cure for what ails me.
