I pass by there all the time. My question is, how hard is it to navigate one of those delicious places while a very obvious ‘outsider’ - will I get shooed away for pronouncing khachapuri wrong?
Yvo, they’re pretty friendly to “outsiders,” and you can always point if there’s a language barrier. It’s pronounced “HATCH-a-poori.” Good luck!

Rego Park's Bhukarian Broadway, better known as 108 St., is chockablock with delis and markets catering to the nabe's homesick Uzbeks and other Central Asians. The sign above A&R International Food II looks like it translates to "factotum," but it's actually "gastronom," an apt name for a spot sells the flaky khachapuri that I'm holding aloft. Back in Georgia, it would be filled with suluguni, a salty pickled cheese. I'm glad that A&R forgoes using pickled dairy product in its khachapuri. The rich pastry pocket is filled with a mixture of mozzarella and feta. Think of it as a savory, salty, buttery cheese turnover.
