Thanks to plenty of interesting dishes, like gudeg,or young jackfruit stewed in coconut milk and aromatic spices, Java Village has become my favorite Indonesian restaurant. If I lived in a Javanese village I might wind up weighing 300 pounds since the snack known as kering kentang is so addictive. I'm told it translates to "dry potato" which hardly does the this $2.50 tub of deliciousness justice. Crunchy homemade potato chips are tossed with chili peppers, sugar, peanuts and fried shallots. There's also a goodly amount of salt and a touch of the thick sweet Indonesian soy sauce known as kecap manis. Each bite of Java's answer to the potato chip, is simultaneously crunchy, sweet, salty, nutty fiery. Kering kentang is great cold, but it's even better when eaten while still warm. Since it doesn't appear on Java Village's menu you can impress the staff with your knowledge of Indonesian cuisine by asking for it by name.
