WHAT:
Comination Congee
HOW MUCH:
$3.25
WHERE:
East Corner
New York, NY
On any given rainy, cold day in NYC, I crave comfort, something hot and soothing that will warm me to my core. Congee is that dish for me, and no congee but East Corner's congee (preferably combination) will do. East Corner's congee is like no other; the texture is not thick and clumpy like most other places in Chinatown, but smooth, silky, and still hearty enough to fill you up with just one bowl (ok, it's a large bowl, but still). They don't skimp on the ingredients, which just add to the experience by giving textural contrast and adding their own flavors. I've heard people rave about the "leather egg skinny pork congee" (literally translated from Cantonese... may be inaccurate since my Cantonese is very laughable!) here, but I'm loyal to my combination congee. Any one of these is delicious though! The price does include tax, and if you're allergic to peanuts, warn them because they top most of their congees with peanuts at the last minute. If you have a big appetite and you get there early enough (they run out because they are so good), you have to also order the fried dough, which clocks in at something like 60c and makes a great dipping accompaniment to any congee (they have a sweet version as well, called cow's tongue, but I assure you, it's pastry). Mmm, I could go for some congee right about now... It almost makes you wish it rained more. Almost. PS. As you can see from the pics, I actually got this recently for takeout, and they do not skimp at all on anything. Yummm.
