It stretches the imagination, supping spoonfuls of homey, grandma-worthy, warmly spiced soup in a space more commonly known for beer-soaked pita bread fights and hipster-thronged jam sessions. Of course, the legendary live music venue at night serves a very respectable Middle Eastern spread during the day, where the bowl of chunky-veggie broth supplements platters of kebabs, kibby and grape leaves. Unlike any other lentil soup I’ve experienced, this isn’t of the thick goopy variety, but rather coddles chopped carrots, celery, potatoes and zucchini, with a mere sprinkling of lentils. Exotically aromatic, like pumpkin pie, which left me guessing: Cinnamon? Nutmeg? An inquiry to the kitchen confirmed that a seasoning of salt, pepper and … allspice! Aw, Nana, you rebel rockstar, you.
